The most complex biological construction project begins long before a child sets foot in a classroom and well before birth. It is the development of the human brain. Research shows a direct correlation between adequate Vitamin D intake and a thriving brain in areas associated with thinking and learning, like the hippocampus and cerebral cortex, where Vitamin D receptors are most prevalent. Vitamin D taken during the latter half of pregnancy facilitates the connection between baby’s brain cells and its ability to retain memories.

2. DHA: The Structural Engineer

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an Omega-3 fatty acid, is essential for cognitive performance and learning ability; it’s a major structural component of both the brain and the retina, providing both structural support to maintain healthy brain and retinal cells, as well as facilitating proper cellular connections between neurons. The COPSAC Vitamin D Follow-Up Study

A major study published in JAMA Network Open revealed significant memory differences among children of 10 years of age whose mothers were provided either 400 or 2,800 IU of Vitamin D per day during pregnancy.

Those in the high Vitamin D group (2,800 IU) showed higher memory performance than those in the low-dose group (400 IU). This research hints that vitamin D can play a vital role in the proper development of brain-based memories in utero.

The COPSAC Fish Oil Trial

While the results for this trial focused more on potential long-term respiratory health impacts and are nuanced, there’s also interest in this trial’s findings for the neurological benefits of Omega-3s in fetal development. However it’s important to note there wasn’t a direct comparison for memory or cognitive benefits as is the case in the DOMInO trial, below.

The DOMInO Trial

A landmark study where pregnant women were either supplemented with 800 mg of DHA or a placebo during the second half of pregnancy. The children whose mothers were given DHA showed impressive advantages in visual development, the acquisition of spoken language, and sustained attention, all of which are core elements of infant and child development and function.

Why This Matters

Vitamin D and Omega-3s working in sync could offer enhanced benefits for building and supporting healthy brain development in babies, not just in pregnancy, but for years to come.

This research demonstrates how a mother’s dietary intake of these nutrients directly contributes to the brain health and overall development of her child. It emphasizes the need for comprehensive pregnancy-focused supplementation regimens beyond basic vitamin-mineral support, specifically focusing on brain-building nutrients like Vitamin D and Omega-3s.
